Hello, and welcome to another episode of our podcast. I’m your host, Sam, and today we’re delving into an incredibly important topic: cultivating a positive workplace culture.
I want to kick off this conversation with a quote from the late Maya Angelou who once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Nowhere is this more apparent than in the workplace.
We spend a large portion of our lives at work. That's why it’s essential to foster an environment that not only encourages productivity but also promotes positivity and respect. After all, as Richard Branson once said: "Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If employees are treated right, they treat the outside world right."
Back in 1914 Henry Ford doubled his workers' pay while simultaneously reducing their work hours - a move that was heavily criticized at the time. Yet by putting his employees' wellbeing first he saw increased productivity and loyalty – which ultimately led to increased profits – proving that happy workers are indeed productive workers.
It's not just about tangible benefits though. A positive workplace culture thrives on recognition; acknowledging efforts goes a long way towards fostering satisfaction and motivation. As William James put it: "The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.”
Emotional intelligence plays an integral role too. Remembering that everyone has bad days and showing empathy can make all the difference between a toxic and supportive work environment.
Now for that random fact I promised: Did you know the term 'company culture' was first coined in 1951 by Dr Elliott Jaques? It wasn’t until decades later though, with companies like Google leading the charge, that it became recognized as an essential part of business success.
