In this fast-paced world that's ever-evolving, it's crucial for leaders to remember one powerful quote from the renowned poet Maya Angelou, who once said, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." This holds so true in leadership as well.
One historical anecdote that beautifully illustrates empathetic leadership is President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Lincoln was known for his frequent visits to hospitals to meet wounded soldiers. He listened to their stories and concerns with genuine interest and warmth. This was a leader who showed care and empathy towards his team - not just on paper but in action.
It might seem like an odd choice of analogy for today’s corporate world, but think about it – isn’t leading a team something like leading an army? You have objectives and goals; there are challenges along the way; there are victories and losses. And at the heart of it all are people – your team members – who need understanding and empathy just as much as they need direction and instructions.
Now moving onto our random fact for today! Did you know that according to research by Businessolver, 92% of employees believe showing empathy is an important way to advance employee retention? That’s quite a number!
But how can we apply these insights into our lives? Well, here are three actionable ways:
1) Listen actively: Make it a point to listen more than you speak when interacting with your team.
2) Show genuine interest: Ask about their well-being or their interests outside work occasionally.
3) Recognize & Appreciate: Celebrate wins, no matter how small they are. It makes people feel valued and seen.
