Sam: Hello, listeners! This is Sam, your host for today's episode. We're going to dive into a rather fascinating subject that I believe will resonate with many of you. So let’s get straight into it.

Sam: Today, we're talking about Empathetic Leadership and understanding your team's needs. But before we delve deeper, here's a quote that sums up the essence of what we want to discuss today. It's from Stephen R. Covey’s book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People," where he says, “Seek first to understand, then to be understood”.
Now isn't that powerful?

Sam: Let me share an anecdote with you – remember President Abraham Lincoln? Not only did he lead the United States through its civil war but his empathetic leadership style also played a critical role in ending slavery.
In fact, former slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass once said about Lincoln: "In his company, I was never reminded of my humble origin or my unpopular color". Now this statement speaks volumes about Lincoln’s ability to make others feel seen and understood despite their differences - a true mark of empathetic leadership.

Sam: But how does this translate into our modern working environment? Well, it starts by creating a culture of empathy within our teams. By understanding others’ perspectives and emotions, we can foster an environment that breeds innovation and collaboration.
Here’s a random fact for you - according to Businessolver’s 2020 State of Empathy report, 91% of CEOs believe empathy is directly linked to a company's financial performance. Now that's food for thought!

Sam: As leaders or even as team members, recognizing each other’s needs isn’t just beneficial; it's essential for growth. And not just business growth – personal growth too!
That brings me to today's actionable insight: Start by simply listening. Whether it’s a team meeting or a casual conversation, take the time to listen without the intent to reply, but with the intent to understand.
And remember, empathy isn’t about agreeing with someone else’s perspective. It’s about understanding it.

Sam: As we wrap up today's episode, I urge you to reflect on your own leadership style or even your interactions within your team. Are they based on understanding and empathy? If not, how can you make them so?

Sam: If this episode resonated with you, share it with friends and family. Let's create a ripple effect of empathetic leadership. Until next time, keep leading with empathy.
