Networking isn't just about handing out business cards at conferences or having a quick chit-chat over coffee. It's an art form that requires careful cultivation and maintenance.
Think about the most memorable people you've met throughout your life. What made them stand out? Was it their charisma? Their unique perspective? Or maybe it was their genuine interest in you and what you had to say. As Maya Angelou beautifully put it, "People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel."
On this note, let's traverse back into history for a moment to recount an inspiring tale about the power of connection. Dale Carnegie, the esteemed author of 'How to Win Friends and Influence People', once narrated an engaging story about Charles Schwab - The first American who was paid a million-dollar salary annually.
Schwab wasn’t paid such a high wage merely because of his knowledge or his skills; there were plenty of men who knew more than him. Schwab was paid such a hefty sum largely because of his ability to deal with people — his astounding knack for making others feel valued and important.
So here’s my challenge for you today: Next time you find yourself in a networking situation, try adopting some of Schwab’s techniques. Listen actively, show genuine interest and make others feel important.
Now here’s a fun little fact: Did you know that the term “networking” first appeared in English in 1972? It was initially used to describe the process of setting up and maintaining a computer network. Over time, it evolved into the social concept we know today.
