Notably, during the Civil War when emotions ran high and people were quick to pass judgment on others, Lincoln advocated for understanding and empathy instead of hatred or vengeance.
In one instance after a Union victory, his advisors suggested a grand celebration to rub their victory in the Confederates' faces. But Lincoln chose a different path saying: "Don't criticize them; they are just what we would be under similar circumstances." His actions demonstrated a profound sense of moral integrity.
Translating this into our lives today means tackling our daily decisions with compassion at the forefront of our minds — valuing empathy over ego, understanding over judgment.
Here's an interesting fact about ethical leadership you might not know — did you know that according to a 2015 study by KRW International CEOs whose employees rated them high on character had an average return on assets of 9.35% over a two-year period? That's nearly five times as much as what CEOs with low character ratings had!
