[Theme music fades in] Hello and welcome back to another enlightening episode of ‘Talk with Sam’. I'm your host, Sam. Today, we are going to delve into an intriguing topic that has fascinated me for a while now: Philanthropy - Giving Back to Society. Speaking of philanthropy, it brings me back to a remarkable quote by Winston Churchill. He once said, "We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give." Quite profound isn't it? Philanthropy is not just about signing big checks or donating huge sums to charity. It's the compassionate effort towards improving the wellbeing of fellow beings and our planet. Let's take a trip down memory lane to Ancient Greece where the term 'Philanthropy' was born. The word literally means love for mankind. But did you know that this concept was institutionalized during the 1600s when English 'Charity Schools' were established for poor children? This marked an important milestone in our history of giving back. Now let’s move onto something more recent. Remember Bill Gates’ powerful speech at Harvard University back in 2007? He said “Humanity's greatest advances are not in its discoveries – but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity.” This reflects how philanthropy can act as a catalyst for societal change, bridging gaps and promoting equity. Here's an astounding fact: The total charitable giving by individuals in America amounted to nearly $292 billion in 2020 alone – which was up by 2.2% from 2019 despite the pandemic! That’s quite compelling evidence of how much difference individual contributions can make! So, how can you contribute? You may ask... It doesn't always have to be monetary. You can donate your time, skills or resources. Volunteer at local organizations, mentor someone who needs guidance or simply pick up litter on your morning walk. Small actions can have big impact! As we wrap up today, I want to leave you with a thought from poet Maya Angelou: "I have found that among its other benefits, giving liberates the soul of the giver." So let's do our part in making this world a better place. If today's episode sparked some thoughts or motivated you to give back in any way, I'd absolutely love if you could share it with your friends and family. Let’s spread this spirit of generosity and compassion around. Until next time, remember every act of kindness counts, no matter how small. Keep giving and keep living! [Theme music fades out]
