Hello there, folks! I'm Sam, your host for today's episode. We're about to embark on a fascinating journey into the world of politics. But not just any part of politics, we're diving deep into understanding governance and policy.
While drinking my morning coffee and flipping through pages of my favorite book, 'The Fifth Risk' by Michael Lewis, I stumbled upon a quote that got me thinking. He said, "What government does is so vast it's impossible to grasp." And isn’t that true? The magnitude and complexity of what governments do can be overwhelming.
But let's take a moment to dissect this intricate web. To understand why our governments function the way they do and how policies are created and implemented.
Governance refers to the process of governing, whether it's by a government, a network or a market. It’s about the rules set in place for effective management. Policies, on the other hand, are those tangible guidelines or courses of action that govern these procedures.
Now, let’s take you back to 1941 when Franklin D Roosevelt delivered his iconic Four Freedoms Speech amidst World War II chaos. He spoke about four essential human freedoms – freedom of speech and expression, freedom to worship God in one's own way, freedom from want and freedom from fear.
This speech was more than just words; it was a guiding principle for policymaking in post-war America. It reflected how policy decisions were intertwined with societal values and needs at that time.
Fast forward to today - policy-making has evolved vastly but continues to revolve around societal needs albeit now accommodating global challenges like climate change & cybersecurity threats.
Here’s an interesting fact for you: Did you know that Bhutan measures its success not through Gross Domestic Product but Gross National Happiness? This unique approach is ingrained in their policy-making process reflecting their focus on holistic well-being.
As we navigate our lives within these intricacies of governance and policy, it’s important to remember that every policy in place reflects a decision, a choice made by those in governance. As citizens, we must engage and influence these choices, for as Plato famously said, "One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors."
For those of you intrigued by today's discussion and are keen on understanding more about how governance shapes our world, I recommend reading 'The Federalist Papers'. It’s an excellent start to delve deeper into this subject.
Before we wrap up this episode, I'd like to leave you with an actionable insight: Stay informed. Engage in constructive debates. Your voice matters and can shape the policies impacting your life.
